modern knowledge is complex, interdisciplinary, and massive. It is rarely possible to comprehend an entire field of study, and even more rare to be able to personally investigate the results and core data of the field. It is therefore necessary to have experts and canonical works and beliefs which define the field of knowledge and which elements of information or technique are valid within that field.
The problem comes from the equal necessity of having an agenda within that field. Agendas come from many places: beliefs, economic opportunity, new ideas, etc., but the end result is that everyone's view of the knowledge within a field of study is shaded by their personal goals and beliefs and therefore suspect.
This creates a situation where we must ponder the nature of truth, and sometimes even whether it is possible to know the full truth at all.
